Telluride Colorado Vacation Lodging - Family

Day Trip To: Ouray Hot Springs, Mouse's Chocolate, Box Canyon Falls & True Grit Cafe

One of our favorite things to do together when there's not a festival or we need a break from the mountain is to go to Ouray for the day.  As the crow flies Ouray is only 17 miles away.  In the summer, many people jeep from Telluride over the Class Four 4x trail over Imogene pass and hundreds run over in mid-September for the Imogen Pass run.  But we recommend taking the scenic way via highway 145, 162 and 550.  It's an easy one hour drive that takes you down valley, over Dallas Divide (one of the most photographed view points in the state of Colorado) and up into the Ouray Valley.
Ouray Hot Springs is the second largest natural hot spring in the United States, and there are three main pools. During the summer months there are two water slides which are fun whether you're big or small.  The hot springs pool also has a great poolside cafe where you can get snacks, delicious burgers, fries, hot dogs etc... for lunch.

Locals Tip:  Before you go, call the Ouray Hot Springs Pool - 970-325-7073 and make sure they're open.  The pool closes for cleaning; and you don't want to go all that way and not have it open :)

After a day at the pool it's always fun to stop by Mouse's Chocolate, located on the Main Street of Ouray | 520 Main Street | 970-325-7285.  My weakness is a chocolate milkshake; which you can find along with an assortment of other chocolate delights.  I hear they have some of the best coffee in the area.

Box Canyon Falls is east of town (Ouray) shouldn't be missed.   It's a great short hike which has wonderful views of the town of Ouray and the mountains to the north.   You can go to the top and look down into the falls and there's another trail which takes you over a small suspension bridge and into the belly of the falls.  Kids love this!
Box Canyon Falls is also the location of the Ouray Ice Park in the winter.  It's pretty neat to go and watch the ice climbers on these routes.

On your way back to Telluride, what better way to top an amazing day than by having dinner at the True Grit Cafe in Ridgway.
True Grit is an old western movie starring John Wayne, filmed in and around Telluride, Ouray and Ridgway. John Wayne won an academy award for best actor for his role in the movie.
The True Grit Cafe - 970-626-5739, located at 123 Lena Street, across from Hartwell Town Park offers decent American cowboy cuisine in a very relaxed setting.

Another family adventure could be to go to as many of the landmarks shown in this YouTube video as you can.
